"The grid" is a common name for the power grid. This is a linked system that delivers electricity to the masses. The term off-the-grid (OTG) refers to living in a self sufficient manner, means to have a home that wasn't connected to the electricity grid. Such homes are autonomous; they do not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, natural gas, electrical power grid, or similar utility services. They use natural resources to fulfill their needs. Natural resources like sun, water, wind, bio gas etc. are used up by them. It is most ideal to live an off the grid lifestyle at properties in rural areas, where the home is closer to natural resources that could be tapped for electricity generation. Living off the grid is something that takes a lot of time and energy to set up, but at when it has been set up, you are going to be able to look at something that is quite easy to sustain. How to start "living off the grid"? A very good question that came in our mind. It's not an easy task, but it is far from impossible. Types of Off-Grid Energies There are a number of types of energy for off grid homes. 1.Solar 2.Wind 3.Wood 4.Propane 5.Water (micro-hydro) 6.Geothermal The biggest need will be for heat and cooking. Once you have those two things decided you are pretty much good to go. Cooking on a woodstove is difficult for most people to adjust to but it can be done. Many people, once they learn to do it, would not go back to cooking in an electric oven! There are many sources of sustainable energy and the key is going to be finding the one that is going to suit your location and your situation the best. For instance, there are areas that will benefit the most from the use of wind turbines, while other areas find that the use of solar panels will take them the furthest. For others, water power is going to be the best option to take advantage of. The power that you generate will be stored in a battery bank to be used later or it will be converted from direct current to alternating current and used to run your household. Some tips to save power are:- 1.Heat the home with solar water heaters. 2.Use rain water harvesting plants to preserve rain water and use it for household works. 3.Use Cooking Water to Irrigate Your Plants. Irrigate and fertilize your plants while saving water. 4.Use heat exchange units. 5.Use Hot Water As a Floor Cleaner. Water is a universal solvent that can be used as a floor cleaner. 6.Wind generators and whether or not this option can work for you and your family. Just like solar panels, wind generators could also be used. Providing a great supply of electrical energy when the wind blows this is a great compliment to any home renewable energy system. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT "LIVING OFF THE GRID" Some 180,000 American homeowners live off-grid, according to Richard Perez, publisher of Home Power magazine. Approximately a quarter live in California, and each year the national number grows 33 percent, according to the publisher's database of known off-gridders and estimates of those unreported.
